Dr. Celia
00:00 – 00:22
Hey there, Biz Moms. Welcome to the Biz Mom Life Podcast. I’m your host, Dr. Celia, and today we’re going to have one of those conversations that I wish someone had with me years ago. We’re going to be talking about lead generation between tantrums, not the sanitized Instagram perfect version, the real version, the one where your four-year-old just had a complete meltdown because you gave him a blue cup instead of a green cup, you’re hiding in the bathroom, and you’re trying to
Dr. Celia
00:22 – 00:49
remember what it feels like to be a competent parent, and somehow you have to manage to get yourself together to work on your business later today. And if you ever wondered how to pick yourself up from those depleting parenting moments and still show up for your business, this episode is for you. So let me paint a picture of what happened last Tuesday. My son decided that the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I made him, the exact same sandwich he has eaten happily for weeks, was yucky and tasting funny.
Dr. Celia
00:50 – 01:04
And what followed was 20 minutes of tears, negotiations, and me questioning every parenting decision I’ve ever made. By the time the tantrum was over, I was emotionally drained. Like I was running on complete empty. And you know what was on my to-do list that day?
Dr. Celia
01:05 – 01:20
Reaching out to five potential collaboration partners and connecting with them in a meaningful way. And the old me would have thought, well, I can’t network right now. I don’t feel confident enough to represent my business well. So then I would wait and wait and wait.
Dr. Celia
01:20 – 01:37
And by the time I felt ready, those collaboration opportunities had moved on to someone else who showed up consistently. And here’s what I’m learning. You do not have to be amazing to do business development. You just have to feel human and recognize things are not always going to go the way that you thought they would go.
Dr. Celia
01:38 – 01:55
But first, you need to bridge that gap between depletion and action. And that’s what we’re going to be talking about today. So when you’re in that post tantrum emotional hangover, you need a process to get back to yourself. Not like the perfect version of yourself, but just enough for you to be able to work in your business.
Dr. Celia
01:55 – 02:23
So there are two things that I’ve been trying that I want to share with you. And the first one is doing an immediate reset. and what I do is I take a deep breath and a really deep breath for four counts and I hold to four and out with four. And by doing this you’re letting in more oxygen to your brain which opens up like the feeling of feeling calmer and lighter because you’re giving your body the oxygen it needs when it’s starting to feel really overwhelmed and stressed.
Dr. Celia
02:24 – 02:40
In doing so with this you also need to find your safe space. Maybe it’s stepping outside for 30 seconds, maybe it’s hiding in the bathroom. There is no shame in that by the way. I had some of my most important mindset shifts while sitting on the bathroom floor, crying because of what’s been happening in my day.
Dr. Celia
02:40 – 03:07
And also, during this time period, I want you to tell yourself this, this too shall pass. Tantrums happen, this will end, and your kiddo will move on to something else. Your only job right now is to breathe and remind yourself this is temporary and you will get through this. So once you’ve done that and once you’re starting to feel a bit better, I want you to try this next step, which is to start feeling more human again.
Dr. Celia
03:07 – 03:26
And this is where most business advice gets it wrong. They tell you to jump back into professional mode immediately. But when you’re emotionally depleted and you’re trying to like connect with a collaborator or write that perfect DM or write a compelling email, it just feels impossible. Cause you’re just like filled to the brim with like the emotions and just feeling crummy.
Dr. Celia
03:27 – 03:51
So instead start with like recovery tasks and recovery tasks are things that move your business forward but do not require you to be on. And maybe that’s like three to five posts from potential clients like no thinking required just scrolling and double tapping. Or maybe you’re saving interesting posts to engage with later on. or maybe you want to update one small thing in your CRM or send one emoji reaction to someone’s story.
Dr. Celia
03:51 – 04:16
Like these are less important tasks. These are more relationship maintenance and relationships are the foundation to lead generation. So step three is build momentum gradually and when you start to feel more stable you engage a little bit more like comment thoughtfully on two to three posts or share someone’s post to your stories with a note of why you loved it or even send a quick voice memo to someone in your network.
Dr. Celia
04:16 – 04:32
And I want you to notice that I said a little bit more, not everything at once, because we’re building momentum slowly, not creating overwhelm. And your body needs to realize that it’s a safe space. Things will get better and it can handle it. So that’s why we’re doing this at a slower pace.
Dr. Celia
04:34 – 04:52
So step four is full engagement when you’re ready. Like when you’re starting to feel more like yourself, not perfect, but just like yourself, that’s when you tackle the bigger tasks, like the personalized DMs, the follow-up emails, reaching out to potential clients, the contact creation. But this part is key. You do not have to wait until you feel perfect again.
Dr. Celia
04:52 – 05:19
You just have to start feeling more like yourself. You might be wondering, like, what are lead gen activities that actually work and I’m going to give you like a list of examples for each type of category. So these are a list of activities which are organized by energy levels because what you can do when you’re still recovering is different from what you can do when you’re firing on all cylinders. Let’s take recovery task, and this is when you’re still feeling shaky and not that great.
Dr. Celia
05:19 – 05:36
And when you’re feeling like this, these are lead gen activities you can do. Number one, you could like three to five posts from potential clients or collaborators. Number two, you could save interesting posts to engage with later. Or number three, you could update your CRM with one small piece of info.
Dr. Celia
05:37 – 05:57
Number four, you can send one emoji reaction to someone’s story. Or number five, review your DM box and mark which messages need responses. Or number six, adding one person to your email list contact from the business card you collected at a in-person networking event. So the second category is building momentum tasks.
Dr. Celia
05:57 – 06:32
And this is when you’re getting your feet under you, when you’re feeling better, but you’re not up to speed, but you still want to do something. These are some ideas you may use or not use, it’s up to you, but I just want to give you a list so you could always refer to it whenever you needed to get back on track. So for this category, you could either do number one, comment thoughtfully on two to three posts from ideal clients, or share one person’s post to your stories with a note, or number three, send a quick voice memo to someone in your network. or even number four reply to two to three Instagram stories with actual responses.
Dr. Celia
06:32 – 06:59
Number five send one follow-up email to reconnect with someone and when you’re actually like you’re feeling good and you’re back to feeling like capable that you could work on your business these are the full energy tasks to work out in regards to lead generation. which is number one, write and send a personalized DM to someone new. Two, create a thoughtful post show encasing your expertise. Spend 10 minutes engaging meaningfully in Facebook groups.
Dr. Celia
06:59 – 07:21
Write a detailed follow-up email to a warm lead. Contact a warm lead through like Voxer or Instagram or however you’ve been communicating or record a quick video for social media. or research one new podcast or collaboration opportunity, or even like write or schedule two to three posts for the week ahead. And this is not like an exhaustive list.
Dr. Celia
07:21 – 07:50
This is just like some things you can try out. You may have things that work for you better for your business. And I highly suggest taking this category, which is like the recovery task while you’re still shaky, building momentum tasks while you’re getting your feet under you or full energy tasks when you’re back to feeling capable and customizing it to your own business and what you’re capable of. So in order to do this, we also have to take a step back and address like the mindset shifts that makes this possible.
Dr. Celia
07:50 – 08:09
Like shift number one is that professional does not mean perfect. Like the biggest lie we tell ourselves is that we need to be in perfect professional mode to do the business development, but your humanity is actually an asset, not a liability. When you reach out to someone who’s having a hard parenting day, you’re not broken or less professional. You’re real and people connect with real.
Dr. Celia
08:10 – 08:26
And people connect with real moments you’re having in your life. Like you’re having a tough day because your son is not listening to anything you’re saying and you’re just feeling like a crummy parent. Like people connect to that. So being real and being yourself is an asset, not a liability.
Dr. Celia
08:27 – 09:02
And shift number two is quality over quantity when your time is fragmented. and you don’t need to send like 20 DMs when you only have 20 minutes send one really good one like comment meaningfully on three posts instead of liking 50 when your time is limited make the engagement count so shift number three would be like redefining consistency and consistency doesn’t mean doing the same thing the same time every day when you’re a mom consistency means showing up regularly in whatever way you can Some days, that’s a thoughtful post. Some days, it’s like three genuine comments.
Dr. Celia
09:02 – 09:13
Both matter. And shift number four is your energy will come back. And this is a big one. Like when you’re in that depleted moment, it feels permanent.
Dr. Celia
09:13 – 09:26
But when your energy will come back, your confidence will return. You do not have to wait for it to start. Let’s start it where you are at and let the momentum carry you forward. And I want you to remind yourself this, especially when the times are hard.
Dr. Celia
09:28 – 09:42
So let me show you how this works in practice. Like last week, my son had a meltdown because I wouldn’t let him wear his pajamas to the grocery store. And after 15 minutes of negotiating and tears, I was emotionally spent. The old version of me would have written off the rest of the morning for business tasks.
Dr. Celia
09:43 – 09:58
But instead, I took a deep breath, remind myself this is temporary and started small. I liked a few posts from people in my network. Then I saved an interesting article someone shared to engage with later. And then I sent a quick voice memo to a colleague saying, thinking of you, I hope your week is going well.
Dr. Celia
09:58 – 10:13
By the time I’d done these three small things, I felt more like myself. So, I commented more thoughtfully on two more posts for potential referral partners. I replied to an Instagram story for someone I’d been wanting to connect with for a while. And by the end of the day, I felt more like myself.
Dr. Celia
10:13 – 10:40
Like, I connected with real people, contributed something meaningful to conversations, and reminded myself that I could still show up for my business even after a rough parenting moment. And none of this would have happened if I had waited until I felt ready. So you’re probably wondering, okay, Dr. Celia, this sounds great and this works in the moment, but how can I make this work long-term? And I wanted to give you some tips to help you with this so you’re even prepared for the short-term and the long-term.
Dr. Celia
10:42 – 10:56
So how to make this approach work long term is prepare your options in advance. Don’t wait until you’re in recovery mode to figure out what to do. Keep your task list handy so you can quickly choose and get started. And step number two is give yourself permission to start small.
Dr. Celia
10:57 – 11:07
Like some days, liking three posts is your lead generation for the day. And that’s enough. And that’s OK, because there are going to be days that we’re not going to be able to do much. And just even doing that is enough.
Dr. Celia
11:08 – 11:21
Step number three will be tracking your patterns. Notice when you typically have these depleting moments and when your energy usually rebounds. This will help you plan and prepare better for the future when this happens again. And this is very important.
Dr. Celia
11:22 – 11:30
Step four is celebrate the small wins. Every small action builds momentum. Every genuine connection matters. Do not minimize the impact of starting small.
Dr. Celia
11:32 – 11:46
So Biz Moms, I want you to remember this. Your business does not need the perfect version of you. It needs a real version of you showing up consistently in whatever way you can. Those hard parenting moments, they do not disqualify you from your business success.
Dr. Celia
11:46 – 12:12
They make you more relatable, more human, more connected to the other parents you serve. Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can. Your energy will come back, your confidence will return, and your business will grow one small genuine action at a time.
