3 Types of Interruptions Every Mom Business Owner Faces (And How to Handle Them)

You finally blocked out 30 minutes for your business work, just like all those productivity blogs suggested. You’ve set your kids up with Bluey, thinking you’re one step ahead.. Then it starts: “Mom, I want animal crackers!” You get the animal crackers, thinking you can quickly get back to work. But now they want animal crackers with peanut butter. Your frustration builds as your carefully planned business time slips away, one snack request at a time.

Sound familiar? As mom business owners, we know that taking care of your business means navigating constant interruptions. Whether you’re setting small business goals or working on larger business projects, interruptions are inevitable. But here’s the thing – we can learn to work with them, not against them.

The Kid Interruption Dance

Let’s be real – kid interruptions are part of our business journey. The key isn’t eliminating them (impossible!) but developing strategies to handle them. When taking care of your business involves tiny humans, you need two approaches: a re-centering strategy for mid-interruption moments, and protected pockets of time when interruptions are less likely.

Here’s your “Return to Focus” ritual for after kid interruptions:

  • Take three deep, intentional breaths. Place your hand on your heart if you need extra grounding.
  • Acknowledge your feelings without judgment. Frustration is normal!
  • Do a quick physical reset: roll your shoulders, stretch your neck, or shake out your hands.
  • Look at your task list and verbally state what you were working on.
  • Set a timer for 2 minutes to mentally transition back to work mode.
  • Start with one small, achievable task to rebuild momentum.

The Unexpected Chaos (Like Sick Days and Snow Days)

Sometimes life throws you a curveball. When taking care of your business meets unexpected interruptions, you need a solid strategy. Here’s how to handle these moments:

  • Accept the Reality Check:
    • Acknowledge that these interruptions are part of life
    • Give yourself permission to adjust your business goals setting
    • Remember that this is temporary
    • Focus on what you can control
  • Create Your Survival Strategy:
    • Identify your absolute must-do business tasks
    • Know which tasks can be delegated or postponed
    • Have a pre-planned communication template for clients/team
    • Keep an emergency task list ready
  • Recovery Mode Protocol:
    • Start with your highest impact activities first
    • Gradually reintroduce regular tasks
    • Adjust timelines realistically
    • Communicate clearly with all stakeholders

The Silent Saboteur: Avoidance Interruptions

Here’s where it gets interesting – sometimes we’re interrupting ourselves. When taking care of your business means facing uncomfortable tasks, we often create our own interruptions.

Recognize Your Avoidance Patterns:

  • Notice when you’re choosing “busy work” over priority tasks
  • Identify which tasks trigger procrastination
  • Track your go-to distraction activities
  • Monitor your social media “escape” habits

Ask yourself these reflection questions when you notice avoidance:

  • What emotions come up when I think about this task?
  • Am I avoiding this because it feels too big? How can I break it down?
  • What would completing this task make possible in my business?
  • What support do I need to move forward?
  • What’s one tiny step I could take right now?

Your Detailed Action Plan to Get Back to the Task at Hand

  1. For Kid Interruptions:
    • Create a visual “Do Not Disturb” signal your kids understand
    • Set up a “mom’s working” activity box they only get during business time
    • Practice your return-to-focus ritual daily
    • Track your most productive times and align them with natural breaks in kid activities
    • Create a “quick pause” system for your work that makes resuming easier
  2. For Unexpected Interruptions:
    • Maintain a running “must-do” list of essential business tasks
    • Remember you will be able to work on your business when things settle down
    • Have backup childcare options if possible
    • Keep a “sick day” business protocol ready
    • Document your processes so others can help if needed
  3. For Avoidance Interruptions:
    • Ask yourself why are you avoiding it, Do you need to do it? If so, Break intimidating projects into 15-minute action steps
    • Set up accountability with another business owner
    • Create a “fear-facing” reward system (For example: After tackling that scary sales call, treat yourself to a fancy coffee or 15 minutes of guilt-free scrolling. The key is to pair challenging tasks with immediate rewards that matter to you)
    • Keep a wins journal to remember that you are doing more than you think you are!
