I had a conversation with a peer who voiced about wanting to switch careers but felt trapped.
They had mentioned aspects of why they were stuck that was all too familiar to me.
-How can I leave now when I have student loans to pay off?
-I want to leave but the benefits, security and paycheck is holding me back.
-I have a medical degree. There is nothing else I can do but medicine.
I asked:
-Can you see yourself practicing medicine for the next 10-15 years?
There was a long pause.
She reluctantly stated ‘No’
I could hear the weariness in her voice.
I told her about my experience.
She was startled to learn that I pivoted and even more so, there are options out there.
Some doctors choose utilization management, clinical research, biotech, medical writing, expert witness just to name a few.
Other doctors chose to be their own entrepreneurs.
Why?
–continue helping others.
-have the flexibility to run a business but also have time to spend with family
-potentially make more than you did as a doctor.
-love your career again.
It is the norm to switch careers in business, corporate, technology etc.
Why not in medicine?
Just because you have a medical degree doesn’t mean you are stuck being only a doctor.
There are so many options out there.
